Used from the teens through the 20s, visible pumps were pumped full with the handle on the side to an overflow tube in the clear cylinder on top. The attendant would then place the “banana” nozzle in your tanke and open a valve while watching the fluid level through the glass. As see in the closeup photos, he simply closed the valve when the level reached the matching number on the cylinder wall of gallons purchased. You will see the price sign fastened to one of the rods along side the cylinder.
